Santiago de Cali University, a leading private institution in Colombia, has transformed the operations of its campus. Working with Hikvision’s integrated smart campus solution, it has streamlined access, strengthened security, and laid the foundation for more efficient campus management.
As one of Colombia's largest private universities, Santiago de Cali University is continually improving the way it manages and operates the campus. Beyond creating a safer learning environment, the university wanted to simplify daily operations, improve mobility across campus, and provide a more convenient experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
A key priority was to modernize classroom access. With more than one hundred classrooms, managing physical keys required significant time and effort and too often staff had to travel across campus simply to unlock doors before classes began. To begin with, therefore, the university wanted an automated access system that would make classroom entry faster and easier while reducing routine administrative work.
Vehicle management was another important area of focus. Existing systems could not reliably recognize license plates or provide accurate vehicle statistics. Not surprisingly, the university wanted a smarter vehicle access solution that could improve traffic flow while laying the groundwork for integrating an automated parking payment platform in the near future.
To meet these goals, the university deployed an integrated Hikvision smart campus solution which connects and integrates vehicle access, people access control, video security, campus audio, and centralized management. Working through a single platform, these disparate systems help the university operate more efficiently every day.
The campus has 10 busy vehicle entrances and exits, serving both cars and motorcycles. Each entrance is equipped with a Hikvision ANPR Camera (DS-TCG405-E) alongside robust Barrier Gates (DS-TMG520). The cameras automatically recognize approaching license plates and verify registered vehicles, allowing the barriers to open automatically without manual intervention. This gives registered drivers a quick pass through campus without slowing down for a guard or a card swipe. Visitor vehicles are also recorded, giving the university valuable traffic data and preparing the system for future parking payment integration.
To provide orderly and secure access for foot traffic, Swing Barriers (DS-K3B530X) and Tripod Turnstiles (DS-K3G530X-R/MPg-Dm55) have been installed at main pedestrian entrances. LED indicators clearly show the passing direction, helping maintain smooth pedestrian flow throughout the day. Mounted on these entrances are Ultra Series Face Access Terminals (DS-K1T673TDWX). With face recognition completed in less than 0.2 seconds and accuracy exceeding 99%, authorized users can enter naturally without presenting cards or waiting for manual verification.
Clear communication is essential in a large university. In a newly constructed building, the university has deployed Hikvision audio kits consisting of 52 Analog Ceiling Speakers (DS-QAE0206G1-V) and 27 60W Analog Amplifiers (DS-QAE0A60G1-VB). The solution offers flexible zoning and highly stable sound performance. Teachers and administrators use it for lecture audio, background music, daily campus notifications, and clear emergency evacuation broadcasting.
To create a safer learning environment, the university has deployed more than 700 Hikvision cameras across its five campuses, providing comprehensive coverage of key buildings, public spaces, parking areas, and campus perimeters.
Among them, PTZ Cameras (DS-2DE4225IW-DE, DS-2AE5225T-A) oversee parking lots, sports facilities, and major gathering areas. Their 25× optical zoom captures clear details across large outdoor spaces, while DarkFighter technology delivers excellent image quality even in challenging lighting conditions. Meanwhile, inside critical locations like the campus treasury and the gym, DeepinView Fisheye Network Cameras (DS-2CD6365G0) were deployed. These provide a seamless 360° zero-blind zone image, ensuring that entire rooms are monitored from a single vantage point.
Everything is tied together using the HikCentral Professional platform. Currently, administrators use it to monitor real-time vehicle counts and track classroom access records. Because the system logs every door entry, the university can easily verify that faculty members are present during their scheduled teaching hours. In the future, the platform will be expanded to manage full student attendance and process automated parking fees.
The smart campus solution has improved both efficiency and campus operations. Vehicles and pedestrians move through entrances quicker than before, classroom access has been fully automated, and staff no longer spend hours managing physical keys. At the same time, centralized records provide valuable operational insights that help administrators manage campus resources more effectively.
The upgraded video security system has also strengthened campus safety. High-quality footage helps security teams investigate incidents such as stolen motorcycle helmets and minor traffic accidents. Over the past year, the university has also prevented approximately 40 unauthorized breach attempts.
